Spending time with family is getting more difficult as time goes on. We all have busy schedules. During the week we have work, school, kids’ afterschool activities, and home responsibilities. On the weekends, we have more activities and social appointments, in addition to the things we couldn’t get done during the week. We have to create time in our schedules to spend time together as a family. There are many activities we can do to have fun and be together as a family unit, besides taking a costly vacation.
Something we do anyway is eat a meal. Why not do it when everyone can sit and spend time together talking? We can make dinner at home, or go out to eat at a restaurant. The important thing is to make sure every member of the family is able to participate in the discussion without any distractions.
Exercising is another great way to spend time together as a family. Do an activity that everyone is able to do, such as jogging, walking or bike riding. Make sure everyone is able to keep up, so that it’s done together. It’s also important that everyone has fun.
If staying in is what you prefer, find a book that everyone would enjoy and take turns reading each chapter while everyone listens. You can discuss what you’ve read at the end of the reading. Or watch a movie together. You can pop popcorn, or make a huge ice cream sundae that every member can share while you watch. These are very inexpensive and fun ways to spend time together.
If your family enjoys board games and competition, you can have a family game night where everyone takes turns picking the game. If your family doesn’t enjoy board games, or you just want to go out, take a trip to the bowling alley or the mini golf course. Splitting up with guys vs. girls, or parents vs. kids is always fun.
Take a camping trip to a local camp site and get away from all technology and electronics. If your family doesn’t enjoy true camping, or you don’t want to be away from home, camp in the backyard. This way you’ll have a bathroom and modern conveniences, and even a place to go if you get too cold during the night. Just make sure everyone spends time together during your camp out.
Explore new places as a family. You can go to a park or a museum together. Attending a show is also a great idea. There are so many you can see. You can go to a movie or a stage show. Check your local area, or theatrenews.com for ideas that your whole family would enjoy.
